KEITH GOODWIN AWARD

The KEITH GOODWIN AWARD is presented annually by AIC-BC to recognize a designated member for outstanding service, leadership, achievement, education, or mentoring. The award is named after AIC-BC’s past Provincial and National president, Keith Goodwin, who personifies these attributes.

The 2023 Keith Goodwin Award was presented to Larry Dybvig, P. App., AACI, Fellow, by Keith Goodwin, P. App., AACI, Fellow, Retired at the AIC-BC’s 50th Anniversary celebration event on Friday, November 3rd, 2023.

Larry started his real estate career in 1977 as a property tax assessor with the Department of Northern Saskatchewan. In 1979, he moved to the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, a multifaceted real estate development, management and financing agency, working in a variety of positions over ten years, finally serving as the Executive Director of Strategic Planning and Communications. Since moving to British Columbia in 1989, he has worked as a fee appraiser, first with an international valuation consulting firm and since 1993, at Grover Elliott & Co. Ltd., where he was President from 2001 to 2018. His work is multifaceted, with an emphasis on appraisal, appraisal review and consulting in matters of dispute or litigation.

Larry has held professional designations from the Canadian and US Appraisal Institutes and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. The Appraisal Institute of Canada honoured Larry with its Fellow designation in 2021, and he has been a fellow of the RICS since 2009. He has been active in the governance of professional organizations having been on National Governing Council of the Canadian Institute and several national committees, including professional liability insurance and Standards. He has been executive editor of the Institute’s professional journal, and from 2000 to 2020 was on the Review Panel of The Appraisal Journal, the US Institute’s professional journal and a leading English journal in the appraisal field; he has served on its Editorial Board.

In addition to his appraisal practice, Larry enjoys professional research, writing and teaching. He has authored papers on contamination and on appraisal reporting for the Institute’s Research and Development Fund, along with numerous articles published in professional and trade journals. Since 1996, Larry has worked as a consultant with the University of British Columbia on the professional appraisal courses it delivers in partnership with the Institute.

Larry contributed to the 11th to 15th editions of the Appraisal of Real Estate, the leading English language appraisal text. Since 1992, he has edited the Canadian edition of this text, with the latest (4th) edition out in fall of 2022. From 1994 to 2013 he authored the Institute’s mandatory professional ethics and standards course. Larry has taught widely, including ethics and standards courses delivered in Hong Kong, and delivered professional courses to national organizations such as Canada Revenue Agency and CMHC. From 2017 to 2021 Larry represented the Institute on the Tangible Assets Board of the International Valuation Standards Commission in the development, enhancement, and promulgation of International Valuation Standards (IVS).
